Veronika Thöne

Bratschistin • Pädagogin

Veronika Thöne was born into a family of musicians. Her father, Karl Thöne, was a music educator, composer, and conductor in Bocholt, Germany. At the age of five, Veronika began her musical studies with her father in Bocholt and soon fell in love with the viola after playing in the Bocholt Youth Symphony Orchestra.

After graduating from the Musikhochschule Aachen in 1989, where she studied viola with Professor Hariolf Schlichtig of the Cherubini Quartet, and from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover, Germany, in 1991 (Pedagogy) and 1993 (Performance) with Mr. Michael Brockhaus, Veronika embarked on her musical journey with the Chamber Orchestra Darmstadt, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie Herford, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, the Staatsorchester Oldenburg, and the Westfälische Philharmonie Recklinghausen, all in Germany.

Since 1994, Veronika has served as Viola Principal with the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia. Since then, her professional life has included not only orchestra playing but also solo and ensemble performance and teaching.

Veronika's extensive chamber music experience includes serving as principal of Kamerata Kuala Lumpur and as a member of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Germany. In 1997, she recorded a CD featuring four of her late father’s compositions together with Professor Matthias Buchholz and Professor Young Chang Cho.

Besides her busy schedule with the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia, Veronika still finds time to dedicate her professional experience to the orchestra's outreach program, promoting classical music to the younger generation. In January 2010, Veronika was appointed as Viola Tutor for the 'Permata Seni Muzik', a special program for gifted children in music.

In February 2021, she initiated and performed together with colleagues from the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia and other violists from the music scene in Kuala Lumpur, a world premiere of Karl Thoene’s composition for Viola Sextet at Aswara Orchestra Hall, Kuala Lumpur.

Veronika is also the founding member of the 'Karl Trio Kuala Lumpur'.
